I'm Janine, wife to Donny and mama to Sebastian (age 18 months). We live (with our annoying dog) in a simple, cozy apartment in Portland, Oregon, where we are working on building our home and our lives with style. I believe in buying secondhand, in basic and natural products, and in living fabulously on any budget. More about us.

Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil

Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil

I have been hearing about the many benefits and uses of coconut oil for awhile, and Tropical Traditions were awesome enough to send me a jar to review. Coconut oil has anti-bacterial and immune boosting qualities and can also be used in many DIY beauty treatments. Rather than write up one long review post, I will be reviewing each use separately as I get to them.

Sebastian 10 Weeks Faux HawkSebastian 10 Weeks Faux Hawk

Above is an unexpected use for coconut oil: Baby hair product! His dad styled this mini faux hawk using just a pinch of the Tropical stuff. Donny has also been using this oil for cuticle cream and it makes a delicious lip balm as well!

I’ll give a tour of our diaper/changing station soon – One of the main reasons I requested a sample of Tropical Traditions coconut oil is to use as a bottom salve to prevent diaper rash. I have been rubbing it on Sebastian’s bum as well as on his chubby legs and belly where they come in contact with his diaper. (Coconut oil is safe to use with cloth diapers.) Zeb doesn’t seem to have particularly sensitive skin but this remedy got rid of the bit of redness he did have, plus who doesn’t want a baby who smells like a coconut!

Other coconut oil uses I plan to try:

- DIY natural homemade deodorant
(Here’s another, this one with a video tutorial)
- Facial cleansing, Moisturizing
- Cooking & sauteing
- Avocolada smoothies

What uses have you tried or heard of for coconut oil?

I love coconut oil! I use it in my lactation cookies as a substitute for some of the butter. It’s healthier and tastes fantastic!!

Also, as a doula I recommend it as a belly rub. ;)
