What would be my perfect mom vehicle?

We are currently a one car family. It’s sort of by choice. When Donny and I started dating many years ago, we each had our own car. I sold my beautiful blue Ford Taurus – A 1986 Taurus, just like me! – to make the deposit on our first apartment together. The plan was always for me to buy a new car eventually, but it never really felt like a priority. Donny was happy to drive me anywhere, and we went most places together anyway. In the rare instance that my husband can’t give me a ride, I’m still content with taking public transit. I actually find the bus relaxing (probably because it’s only a once-in-awhile thing and not my primary transportation) and it’s a fun experience for Sebastian when he gets to ride the bus or train with me. Finances are already tight enough that adding another car just feels unnecessary.

That said, I do find myself fantasizing about my perfect ‘mom’ vehicle. All of the cars I’ve previously owned have been beaters, which frankly suits me, but I would need something safer for toting two little ones around. My husband would love a new model coupe like this 2013 Scion TC, but that’s not quite my style. I actually rather like the idea of a -GASP- mini van. Those Sienna commercials really get me! I think that I could rock a mini van. Mini van, mega fun!

Realistically, I’ll probably end up with some boat of a beater car, something clunky and big and safe. The only thing I know for sure is that my car will never be sporting any of those stupid stick figure family stickers!

I guess when you have kids, it maybe more necessary to have a car but I always thought of a car as the worst thing you can ever buy with your money (maintenance, rising gas prices, bad for the environment, etc). You guys already have one… there really isn’t a need to get another one IMO (unless you are just upgrading your current car). I ALMOST bought a car too but my boyfriend stopped me and talked me into buying an apartment instead. I’m so glad I listened!

We live in a really pedestrian-friendly neighborhood — I could probably get by without one just fine, even with kids, at least until they’re a lot older. But once in awhile I will see a whole family on the bus getting groceries and I’m SO thankful that we have a car! I like riding the bus but there’s a big difference between visiting a friend by bus on a nice day and HAVING to run your errands by bus in the rain and cold.

(On a nice day, I actually find it much less stressful to grab the stroller versus dealing with the car seat.)

Donny has a car and most of my friends have cars, so it works out OK. Sometimes I do feel like less of an adult because I drive so rarely, and my independence is limited. Donny bought his car before we were married so in my head it will always be his car and I’m not comfortable driving it unless there was an emergency.
