Weekend Reading: What we’re reading this week

Oct 10, 2011 9:48 PM / 7 Comments

I am writing this post as part of James & Jax’s new weekly Weekend Reading blog hop.

I hate to admit this, but I am not a big (print) reader, simply because I am always multitasking. It is the same reason I don’t craft or sew as much as I’d like. Instead, I watch my beloved television courtroom dramas while I go about eating, working and cleaning.

Speaking of cleaning, one of the books I have flipped through lately is Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Home. Which is a bummer, because I went in loving the Mrs. Meyers brand (Oh the scents! The cute retro packaging!) and am now, frankly, utterly put off. I haven’t read the book cover to cover but excitedly flipped through the most relevant chapters. At first I was loving the helpful cleaning tips and fun family anecdotes. My favorite tip in the book so far is to polish one shiny item and place in a prominent location – Guests will see that item upon entering your home and assume that everything is equally spotless. Smart! Unfortunately though, I kept reading through a few too many of Mrs. Meyers strong personal opinions. She dictates that children need to learn to sleep alone, “nightmares or not,” and writes that she locks her bedroom door at night. At one point she writes about how her husband “let” her go back to work. This book has truly great cleaning tips and I’m sure I will hit up the index often, but I wish it would have left the (horribly outdated) family values out of it.

My other most recent read is Lipstick Jungle. This book is as shallow as you’d expert and was an impulse buy at the dollar store. I’ve read through a couple chapters while nursing Sebastian to sleep. It’s the perfect chick shit novel.

Weekend Reading

Sebastian has a few favorite books and I have taken to rotating them, like we do with toys, with his of-the-moment faves in a wicker basket and the rest on the book shelf. Most of them are ‘word books’, which he flips through signing and pointing. He points at body parts – nose and feet especially – and says “Balloon” at anything spherical in shape. He is still saying “Kuh” (like a throat-clearing sound) at animals. Cats seem to be his favorite. He signs at pictures of food. We do read stories too, but we have more fun pointing out items. Of all the baby milestones, learning to talk and sign is by far the most exciting & rewarding for me.

Sebastian really likes all books and will occupy himself for long stretches of time just flipping through his books, my books, and even my magazines. He entertains himself in the morning by looking at his books while his lazy parents try to wake up, and books keep him happy as a clam through long car rides. His favorite car book is What Does Baby Say?. He can also now sign for “book” and reads on the potty.

I have tried to instate more technology-free time in our home but failed horribly so far, although Seb and I have trekked to the library on a few occasions. I fantasize about the husband and I being one of those sexy couples who read in bed but I just don’t see it happening. I do have some books on my wishlist, however, and will try to make family reading time more of a priority going forward.

  1. Oh geez, I don’t think my household could be tech free…ever! Sometimes the hubs and I read in bed, but mostly, we watch tv, ha.

    • The TV is on here 99.9% of the time we’re awake. We are strictly using Netflix right now so there are no commercials or mindless watching but it’s not great. Sometimes though, I wonder why books get such a good rap while TV is generally considered bad; After all, aren’t they both forms of passive entertainment?

I’m currently doing a reread of Douglas Adams’ The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (the 2nd Dirk Gently novel), having paused most of the way thru Rob Swigart’s Little America (late 70s counterculture lit), not sure yet if I’m going back to finish it.

And two weekend visits to the library have got me up to date on the comic series I still follow (Last week was DMZ and B.P.R.D., this week was Scalped and two volumes of Northlanders).

And on my coffee table, waiting patiently for me to stop getting distracted by other books, is The Gonzo Papers Anthology.

Chick shit?! Ha! I love it. So accurate. I’m embarrassed to admit I’m just recently coming down from a chick shit high that lasted for about 4 or 5 books. I think it’s over, though. But I could relapse at any time. Is there a cure yet? Maybe we need a ribbon.

Thanks for linking to the blog hop!

    • “Chick shit” is a reference to the fact that the book’s author is Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell. A line about Carrie not writing chick shit was cut from the first SATC movie, which is mentioned in the commentary. I’m a bit of a Sex and the City nerd.

I’m reading Slaughterhouse-Five for like the millionth time. I need to make a trip to the bookstore soon. Oooh we should do a book swap!

Have you watched Lipstick Jungle on Netflix yet? I can’t bring myself to do it.

How about that crazy alarm in the complex? I was right in the middle of this comment when shit hit the fan hahaha.

  5. Erin says:

ahhh! I think we own that seseme street book! I got a bunch for $1 each at target! Looks familiar!
