Thrift shops and charities to avoid this season (and year-round)

If you are local to Portland, you may have seen this post on Portland Rescue Mission last year. My first car was actually purchased through Portland Rescue Mission and it shocked and saddened me to read that they discriminate against gay people.

Today I came across this post, which bummed me out even more. As you know, I used to LOVE Salvation Army. Despite the giant cross on the wall, I liked to shop there. We attended a new store’s grand opening recently. I’ve found great stuff there. But le sigh, I am not going to be shopping there anymore.

The Salvation Army has a history of active discrimination against gays and lesbians. While you might think you’re helping the hungry and homeless by Thumbnail image for Why you shouldn’t give to the Salvation Armydropping a few dollars in the bright red buckets, not everyone can share in the donations. Many LGBT people are rejected by the evangelical church charity because they’re “sexually impure.”

The organization also has a record of actively lobbying governments worldwide for anti-gay policies – including an attempt to make consensual gay sex illegal. (Yes, you’re paying lobbyists with those donations.)

Read the full thing here.

Whether you are an avid thrifter like me or have thrown some change to their bell-ringers, please don’t support this awful ‘charity’. Despite raising prices, Goodwill does not discriminate. Value Village has no mention of religion on their website and are generally my favorite chain thrift store. Deseret Industries is affiliated with the LDS church but I haven’t found any mention of discrimination. If you have information that I have left out or more stores to suggest, please leave it in the comments!

TiLT: What I’m Loving This Week

Mama & BasMama & Bas

This week, I’m still loving our new apartment! Did I mention we’re all moved in. We’re all moved in! We’ve actually been in since before Thanksgiving and it definitely feels like home. I’ll put up some pictures soon – We still have some finishing touches to do and even after that I have so many more ideas. I found out that we are allowed to paint our walls, which opens up the possibilities, and I really want to just fill up the walls. I think maybe I’ll reveal our space on the blog in bits and pieces as I conquer each area.

20mm jade stone plugs

I am totally still loving my new 20mm plugs (courtesy of Flesh Tunnel – check ‘em out if you have holes to fill!) – They are smooth and pretty and just feel luxurious.

Snowman holiday vest

This week I picked up this snowman vest for $4 at my favorite local thrift shop. They had an entire rack of ‘ugly’ holiday sweaters, although frankly I’m loving this vest in a real, non-ironic way. Sebastian already has a Christmas sweater and now we just need to find Donny one. We have at least one Xmas party invite, plus this will be our first year hosting Christmas at our place!

Dolls

Another new-to-me treasure I’m loving is this little Asian boy doll from the father-in-law’s house. He belonged to Donny when he was little and I am so in love with him! I handed him to Sebastian and he immediately gave him a kiss. So we brought him home and you can see that he is already hitting it off with my girl Lettie.

We have been spending more time at Donny’s dad’s house. It is pretty much the stereotypical grandparent’s house, full of neat and interesting things for Sebastian to check out. He also loves stalking Granddad’s cat. Granddad also has cool stuff for me – I recently went home with a bunch of jewelry that belonged to my mother-in-law, and yesterday we brought home a gorgeous Asian glass painting and some adorable nutcrackers. It’s like an exclusive free vintage shop!

Honorable mentions: I am also digging on the Harvey Prince perfume I am reviewing – Expect a post + giveaway soon! Also, really enjoying Sebastian’s longer naps lately. Lastly, Google+! It feels a lot more focused than Facebook; savvy ideas are happening.

What Sebastian is Loving

This week Sebastian is loving this song from Sesame Street. It will totally get stuck in your head – My holiday gift to you!

Thrifting, thrifting, and more thrifting

The weather around Portland has been on-off sunny & rainy this week and we are doing what we can to avoid stir-craziness. In the past few days we have walked through several thrift stores, including the grand opening of a new Salvation Army where we spun a wheel for a shopping discount and Sebastian got a balloon! We had a lot of fun going up and down the aisles – the Salvation Army Superstore even has a cafe! – and made out with some great finds.

Thrift haul - Dr. Scholls

Liz Claiborne wrap stretch top, $9 (Deseret Industries). I am in love with this shirt! Had to have it. And that is my new thrifting criteria. I usually do well but do occasionally end up with things that I just end up turning around & donating. Pointless! Only buying what I can’t stand to leave on the rack will open up my budget for the stuff I know I really want.

Dr. Scholl’s Tassel Loafers,$4 (Deseret Industries). These were brand new – They still had tape around the tassels. Apparently these are from the 80′s and thus considered vintage. They are really comfy!

Steven Contessa Snow Leopard bag
Steven Contessa Snow Leopard bag - Inside

Am I the only one who comes home and immediately looks up the details/retail value of my thrift finds? This bag is in pitiful condition (a bit of wear on the outside, and stained lining) but I’m still happy with it: Steven by Steve Madden ‘Contessa – Large’ Calf Hair Satchel in Snow Leopard. This might be my new winter bag. $3 (Deseret Industries).

Tiny Talls vintage cards

I adore these cards, which I picked up for just $1.25 (Salvation Army). The copyright dates are from 1968 and there are assorted cards for various occasions. That elephant card on top is probably my favorite, although there are a few “For my wife” humor cards that remind me of Mad Men.

Lastly, this little yellow blazer for Sebastian, $2 (Deseret Industries), complete with an embroidered anchor on the breast. It even looks good with athletic shorts!

My favorite thrift shop finds a new location

As of October 1st, Chase Me Again thrift store has relocated to 2nd & Hood in downtown Gresham. They had quickly overflowed their old spot and I was super excited to check out the new digs last week. Donny and Sebastian came with me to shop around and shoot some photos and we were not disappointed! Donny scored a pair of RVCA jeans for just $3 and I picked up an Asian-inspired graphic tee for just two bucks. Sebastian toddled around and tested out the well-priced kids section. I love that the shop owners recognize us and always make the effort to greet us and pump Zeb for smiles. They are good people doing great work and their prices are phenomenal, especially considering that their selection is much more hand-picked and cultivated than Goodwill or other similar stores. Their passion is obvious and makes for a really fun shopping atmosphere.

Sebastian’s BePE Baby non-skid slippers are the only shoes that he will keep on his feet – I highly recommend them. ~ I may have to go back for this Simply Vera  dress (right) if it’s still there this week – I’m kicking myself that I didn’t at least try it on!

Wish I’d found these pants in the spring – I think I could totally pull them off! ~ By the way, the totally 90′s Calvin Klein denim mini I’m wearing here is from Chase Me Again (I think it was $1.50!), as is the braided leather belt.
