I'm Janine, wife to Donny and mama to Sebastian (age 18 months). We live (with our annoying dog) in a simple, cozy apartment in Portland, Oregon, where we are working on building our home and our lives with style. I believe in buying secondhand, in basic and natural products, and in living fabulously on any budget. More about us.

Bellybar Pregnancy Nutrition Review

Sep 03, 2010 / 1 Comment

Bellybar is a line of snacks targeting both the nutritional needs and cravings that accompany pregnancy. Bellybar products contain vegetarian sources of DHA and folic acid and are designed to provide tastier pre-natal nutrition than a multivitamin. I received Bellybar Chews in both Chocolate Cuddles and Citrus on Board, a Bellybar Boost Bar in each of their flavors and a Bellybar Shake to sample.

Bellybar Pregnancy Nutrition

The Chocolate Chews were the first thing I popped in my mouth. They tasted a teeny bit fishy to me, but I still wanted more. The Citrus chews were equally delicious/addicting. I would have liked to have these in my first trimester when swallowing a giant smelly pre-natal vitamin was less than appetizing. Depending on where you shop, it is about $11 for 30 chews.

I sampled the Bars in S’More to Love, Baby Needs Chocolate, and Berry Nutty Cravings. They were all really good but I’m not a huge chocolate fan so my fave was definitely the Berry. The bars have a great texture and are very filling – Again, these would be ideal for getting essential nutrition during that first trimester. A 5-count box is around $11.

I tried the Shake flavor Due for Chocolate, and it was my favorite of the Bellybar products hands-down. It tasted kind of like the chocolate flavor of Slim Fast (a taste I love) and gave me a notable boost of energy. This is a great way to get your vitamins when the heat or stomach issues make the idea of solid food unpleasant. I have wanted lots of milkshakes through this pregnancy and these have all of the taste plus a lot more nutrients than the drive-through variety. Around $10 for four 8oz shakes.

Bellybar products are available to purchase through their website as well as through Target, Walgreens, Whole Foods and several other stores. Overall, I would certainly buy these on occasion but just wouldn’t find it economical to purchase regularly for a whole nine months or more. I do recommend these for early pregnancy and I might pick some up to snack on for energy during labor. ;)

Bikini Kitchen Booty Butter Review

Aug 19, 2010 / 1 Comment

Bikini Kitchen Booty Butter
Bikini Kitchen Booty Butter sells for $27.95 (USD)

I was happy to receive a sample of Bikini Kitchen Booty Butter to review this summer. Being knocked up, I’m a lot more aware of what I put on my body and, unfortunately, most commercial tanning products have a high toxin rating. I love that Bikini Kitchen discloses their ingredients, and this natural product felt great even on my sensitive pregnant skin. Booty Butter contains coffee, which softens skin and improves circulation, as well as vitamins A, C and E.

I’m not sure how much this product actually accelerated my tan, but it did provide a slight shimmer upon application and felt decadent. The only downside was that while I love the scent of most tanning products, this one smelled a bit funky to me – Then again, I do love that it doesn’t contain artificial fragrances, and my nose is admittedly sensitive right now. I hardly ever deal with bug bites but the Booty Butter potion also claims to be a natural bug repellent.

Overall, I recommend Bikini Kitchen Booty Butter as an alternative to chemical tanning products, especially if you invest the time in sprawling out poolside.

Pregnancy Henna!

Aug 17, 2010 / 3 Comments

Pregnant Belly Henna - Henna Paste Applied on Friday Pregnant Belly Henna
34 Weeks Pregnant

I had my belly painted with henna on Friday and I’m hoping it lasts as long as possible, maybe even until Sebastian is born. It was her first time applying henna on a belly but it came out amazing – The photos really don’t do it justice.

Traditionally, henna is applied during the third trimester of pregnancy to bring positivity and an easy birth. :)

EcoMom Review and $15 Giveaway

Jul 20, 2010 / 19 Comments

This giveaway is closed ~ Congratulations to Ashley R!

EcoMom is a website that sells green, natural and/or organic products for Mom, Baby and Family.

The site carries lots of natural and organic pregnancy, labor and nursing products. They sell a variety of Earth Mama Angel Baby items including oils, sprays and organic teas. Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter ($9.95) is lanolin-free, organic and vegan, and you can find nursing pads (from $3.99) and tons of other breastfeeding support products.

Earth Mama Angel Baby - A Little Something for Mama-To-Be

I received A Little Something for Mama-To-Be*, which includes a Happy Feet foot soak, Natural Stretch Oil and Mint Herbal Lip Balm. I can honestly say that I love this set. Natural Stretch Oil is better than Palmer’s in every way and makes you feel truly pampered, and I intend to save the Mint Herbal Lip Balm for my labor kit. My favorite is the Happy Feet soak, which I have used both in my small foot spa and while soaking my entire body in the bathtub. It feels amazing and smells even better, and with every use the smell fills my entire apartment.

100% Pure Color Cheek Tint, Sugar Plum

EcoMom doesn’t only do baby/pregnancy products – They also offer natural beauty products, such as this 100% Pure Color Cheek Tint ($15), organic soaps ($7), and more.

The only downside to the site is that the categories are overlap a lot, so you really have to browse every section to avoid missing items.
