6 things I’ll do differently with my next pregnancy

04-27-2011 ** Categories: Baby / Tags: ,

Baby resolutions and reflections seem to be going around right now. There was a post on API Speaks of 7 Resolutions for Baby Number Two and a fabulous list of things you should know before you have your baby (Must read #8!) on MiP. Sebastian is now just over seven months old and I can think of several things I would do differently with my next pregnancy and birth.

1. Gain less weight. As I have just hit the halfway mark for baby weight loss, I can’t help but think that this could easily be all of the weight. I intended to only gain 20 pounds during my pregnancy and started off well – First trimester nausea resulted in me losing weight. Cue the second tri and I suddenly had my appetite back. I also developed a cute little bump. I theorized that every extra calorie must be going straight to that round baby belly and that my fetus must be huge. In reality, Sebastian was born at 7 lbs 2 ounces and I had gained a total of 40 pounds. As fun as it is to indulge, it would have been more fun to eat less, work out more and as a result be more comfortable at the end of my pregnancy and happier with my body soon after.

2. Hire a doula! I probably would have ended up with an epidural either way, but I would have loved for someone to have stepped in first and suggested a birthing ball or the tub – both things my hospital birthing center provided. At that level of pain I couldn’t think to do anything other than pace the room and my husband was tired and freaked out. I did communicate well with the hospital staff and loved the way I was treated (with the exception of one strange nurse who gave me the reach-around to check my stitches post-partum) but someone looking out for my birth experience would have been awesome.

3. Buy post-partum clothes in advance! I don’t know why I thought I would be able to get out of the house with a brand new baby to go shopping of all things. The only things that fit me after baby were old pajamas and work out clothes. Maternity clothes do not necessarily fit after birth! I will not be popping out baby #2 without first stocking up on comfy nursing bras, leggings in a variety of sizes and cute XXL tops.

4. Have a blessingway. I first heard the idea of a blessingway on TFB blog and I love the idea, especially the idea of everyone bringing a bead to be strung together and worn while the mother is in labor (See hers here). I had two baby showers before Sebastian was born but I think that a blessingway is appropriate for every child (not just the first, as showers tend to be for).

5. Live tweet the birth! I didn’t want to tweet during Sebastian’s birth because I didn’t want to announce to family until he was born. In my hormonal state, I was convinced that people would show up at the hospital and bombard me with phone calls (despite the fact that I went into labor at 4am). Looking back, I wish that I would have tweeted and TwitPic-ed the whole damn thing. It would have been great to look back at what I was thinking and feeling during labor as well as to get some encouragement from my tweeps. (I do like that I saved most of the newborn photo posting until after close friends and fam had seen Zeb in person.)

6. Save more money for my Mat Leave. I am self-employed and (stupidly, so stupidly!) assumed I would be able to keep up with work while caring for a newborn. WRONG. Luckily we don’t rely solely on my income, but our finances are still reeling from that lack of planning. Next time around I am definitely going to begin building a solid safety net as soon as we start trying to conceive.

Overall, while my experience with Sebastian wasn’t negative by any means, for my next baby I will strive to plan ahead a bit better and try for a greater sense of community throughout my pregnancy, labor and birth.

Before you ask, we are probably going to start TTC for our second child when Sebastian is 2 or 3 years old. Ideally I would love to adopt a baby at some point if money allows. (Both my husband and dad were adopted as infants and adoption is close to my heart.)

Win a 9 Month Supply of Nature Made Prenatals + DHA!

This giveaway is closed ~ Congratulations to Jayme!

Nature Made Prenatal Multi plus DHAMy prenatal vitamins ran out right around the time I gave birth to my son, so I was stoked to receive a supply of Nature Made Prenatals to review. Prenatals are important for most women while they are trying to conceive, are pregnant, or are nursing/pumping. Before I was any of those things, I popped a daily prenatal to speed up growth of my hair and nails – and it worked. Nature Made Liquid Softgel Prenatal Multi for Pregnant & Nursing Moms contain Folic Acid, DHA, Vitamins B6 and B12, and more.

I love B vitamins. They are a quick mood boost, which is why they are often included in energy drinks. I have a B vitamin supplement in my cupboard but they taste foul no matter how quickly I swallow them. These Softgel Prenatals have no taste, which is especially great for moms-to-be in their first trimester!

I am currently taking prenatals while breastfeeding. It can be difficult to fit in healthy, balanced meals each day when you have a new baby and supplements like this can help fill in the gaps.

One Alternative Housewife reader will win a 9 month supply of Nature Made Prenatal Softgels!

To enter: Comment telling me who you want to win these for and why – Are you pregnant? Nursing? Trying to grow out your hair and nails at lightening speed?

Labor story: Baby Sebastian

Sebastian Birth Story

Labor was nothing like I anticipated. I expected to labor at home for hours, excited and impatient. I wondered what would be on TV to keep us distracted and envisioned progressing slowly from bed to the birth center’s birthing ball, then jacuzzi tub. In the three weeks leading up to my due date I paused at every twinge, hoping for more pain, any sign of impending true labor. I tried every old wives tale and we watched dozens of natural induction videos on YouTube.

In reality, my water broke at 4am on September 23rd, four days before my estimated due date, after a few painful but definitely tolerable contractions. I had a prenatal appointment scheduled for just five hours later and was hopeful that, at best, my doctor would tell me that these contrax were leading up to the real deal. Upon hearing a loud, surprising pop at the end of one contraction, I slinked quietly from bed to the bathroom, slightly nervous, but not ready to get the husband’s hopes up.

It absolutely was my water breaking, and I called Donny into the bathroom in what I’m sure was a giddy, sing-songy voice. It was a pinkish gush and I called labor & delivery, who told me to come in and warned that my contractions would soon grow stronger. In close to zero pain at this point, I was skeptical. I messaged a friend, then my September Moms BBM group. One of the Sept moms suggested I eat before being admitted to the hospital, so I drank a bottle of Muscle Milk in the car.

In the 20 minute drive across town, contractions went from next to nothing to unbearable, and were coming every three minutes. I timed them on the dashboard clock, unbelieving of how close together they were.  Not only were the contractions themselves much more painful and intense than I’d imagined they would be, they were leaving me almost no time to recover in between. By the time we had checked into L & D, each new contraction was starting just as the last one had tapered off and I was four centimeters dilated. I requested pain medication and the IV helped immediately, but temporarily.

I went in wanting to avoid an epidural, but the IV meds were losing effectiveness after just half an hour and I knew things were only going to get more painful. I ended up being incredibly happy with the epi. I had feared being totally numb and immobile, but wasn’t. At one point later I even got on hands and knees.

The couple of hours between getting the epidural and my doctor arriving are hazy but when she did arrive she told me to hang out a bit longer until I felt the urge to push. A little over an hour later she came back and I began what would be two hours of pushing. Pushing was my favorite part of the birth process. It felt completely natural and I felt like I had unlimited energy. I had a concrete goal in mind, reinforced each time his head would push down and my doctor/nurse/husband would announce, “Head full of dark hair!”  I was chatting and laughing all the way up until it was time to push the baby all the way out. Donny says he almost passed out from breathing along with my pushes. He was a fabulous birth partner & coach.

It turns out that Baby’s hand was up by his neck, making pushing take longer.

‘Crowning’ is the part of the experience I will have to forget before I ever choose to have another child! Unlike even the closest contractions, actually pushing his head through allowed NO break, just constant, searing & tearing pain. I’m told I let out several loud “mother fucker”s, but that I was pretty quiet overall. The moment he slipped out, my first reaction was just relief. Only when I heard Donny breathe, “Oh my God” did I come back to the moment.

Sebastian Birth Story

Sebastian Birth Story

Baby Sebastian was born at 10:46am on September 23rd, and put directly on my chest. I noticed that he attempted a breast crawl, and he easily latched and breastfed within an hour of his birth. I could not have been happier with my birth experience. Perhaps with half a day or more of labor I could have toughed it out longer, maybe even done it med-free, but for going from my first real contraction to pushing him out in under seven hours, I’m more than happy with my choices. I credit my awesome doctor for urging me from the beginning to keep my options open in regards to a birth plan.

C’mon Labor!

37 Weeks 4 Days

I am totally ready for this baby to be here! I’m full term, slightly dilated, and I’m trying all of the Old Wives Tales to get Sebastian out! My due date is September 27th but two more weeks feels like absolutely forever at this point. I’m killing time borderline-obsessively cleaning our apartment (I don’t want to come home to a dirty house!) and entering cloth diaper giveaways. I cannot wait to meet my son face to face and to get back to skinny again. Hopefully my boobs got the memo that they’re allowed (nay, encouraged) to stay this size indefinitely.

Organic Raspberry Leaf Tea

Raspberry Red Leaf tea is recommended to strengthen the uterus and help bring on contractions. I love tea and it was on sale so I concluded this was meant to be. (I picked up a box of the Organic Mother’s Milk lactation tea as well.) The Raspberry Leaf tea doesn’t have a lot of flavor, unfortunately – I prefer for my tea to have more of a bite – but it is a nice change from the green and peach teas I’ve been sipping all summer.

Papaya & Pineapple

It’s a pretty common OWT that pineapple can send you into labor, and I recently read about papaya juice being recommended to help ripen the cervix. Highly unlikely? Totally, but this fruit was delicious. I would eat this everyday if both foods weren’t so expensive.

Noshed up all of the fruit and been downing the tea but no timeable contractions yet.  I also just got a pedicure that didn’t trigger a damn thing. Le sigh.

Any other ideas to jumpstart labor naturally? (Note: I already know about sex, walking, nipple tweaking & castor oil!)
