Things I Love Thursday

Sebastian is 6 months old! Happy six months, my sweet boy.

Sebastian - 6 months old

The official six month mark was actually yesterday, the 23rd. People always ask me, Aren’t you sad that he isn’t a newborn anymore? Nope, I’m not. As much as I appreciated the long stretches of newborn sleep and that newness, I love this age. He doesn’t seem fragile anymore and I love that he can sleep in the blankets with us. His smiles are real instead of mostly reflex. He can barely crawl but he’s mobile enough that he isn’t constantly frustrated. He has two teeth! He reaches his arms up when he wants to be pulled to a standing position or picked up. He likes to grab my face and plant me with big wet kisses that conclude with latching & sucking on my lower lip. I love watching him grow.

My husband, for many reasons. I feel like we reconnected a lot this week and I’m grateful. Also, my ears would have probably fallen off if it weren’t for him. My stretched holes got infected, forcing me to downsize to 1/2″ (from 5/8″) and if it weren’t for him pushing me to keep my jewelry in and stay on top of salt water soaks and ointment, I’d probably have no plugs at all.

Piggy paint: mine and my husband's

Piggy Paint! I ordered this stuff for Sebastian and I. He is always pulling my hands into his mouth, so I am not comfortable using normal polish – Plus how cute are painted baby nails! Piggy Paint is non-toxic and designed for kids. I purchased Sleepover (black) and a green called Dragon Tears and I love both shades. They hold up really well and don’t dry out my nail beds and make my cuticles ragged like traditional polish. I also like The Polished Mama for non-toxic nail polish but there aren’t nearly as many colors to choose from. Black is classic and green is on point for spring.

Sebastian breastfeeding w black Piggy Paint nails

6 months of breastfeeding – My goal is at least a year (although I’m OK with two) and I’ve now reached the halfway mark! (Although we introduced baby led solids awhile ago, I consider exclusive breastfeeding to mean no formula.) As he gets older, he grabs and paws at me more, which is frustrating, but it is made up for by the sweet cuddles that come with nursing naps. He has started giggling when we snuggle up on the bed during the day and he knows he’s about to get his milkies – It’s so cute it kills me!

Social Spark – I’ve posted a couple of sponsored posts here (never anything that presents a conflict of interest!) with Social Spark, an affiliate blogging program (sign up here!) and made a little bit of money through them. This past weekend when we were short on cash, I made a withdrawal from my Social Spark account and voila! Money in my PayPal account within minutes.

What are you loving this week?

How I Freelance

02-02-2011 ** Categories: Personal Style / Tags: , ,

My day job wasn’t something I planned to write about here, but a reader commented asking me how I do it and I realized it is relevant on a blog where I talk about frugality and being a Work At Home Mom. When I am not trying to churn out blog posts here or playing with Baby Z, I’m busy creating websites and blogs for clients.

I’ve been honing my web design skills (primarily HTML and CSS and I recently focus mainly on WordPress) since junior high – There hasn’t been a solid year since the late nineties where I didn’t have some sort of personal blog site. I was hand-coding blogs before they called them blogs. There was a community of us girls with personal websites and web cams, but it wasn’t ‘cool’. This was before MySpace and only geeks and nerds were online. Of course I had considered making a career out of web design, but I missed the boat on getting a degree straight out of high school and didn’t consider any online degree programs. I assumed that path would be on hold for a long while.

Tower Records @ Gateway in PortlandUp until 2007 I worked retail, mainly at music and video stores (Blockbuster Video, Tower Records, Wherehouse Music). I realized, seemingly in one day, that I could probably make at least minimum wage working from home designing websites (still/already my hobby), so I up and quit working for the man and hopped onto the Craigslist computer section. I sometimes miss filing CDs and chatting up customers but I ultimately love determining my own schedule even more.

The buzz from my first gig was amazing! I charged my first client at least 10x too little but I was stoked. I wasn’t exactly making a living but considering working at home cut down my commuting and lunch costs, it was certainly something to be excited about. My rates crept up from there and continue to move up as I acquire more skill. My top two sources for work are currently word of mouth and Craigslist.

Around four years later and freelance web design is still what I do. For awhile I was self-conscious about the fact that I only do small sites and blogs but the truth is that I have no interest in the programming that typically goes into larger sites. Coding a stylesheet is the most fun a girl can have in my opinion. Learning an e-commerce platform feels a lot more like work. I also love the personal connection I have with my small blog and biz clients. Along with web design, I offer basic networking and SEO services, tutorials and site maintenance.

My income is supplemented by sponsored blog posts and ads. Ideally I would love love love for this blog to be my sole income source and pay all of my bills someday. I also do a fair amount of content writing for other people. For several months I wrote fashion and beauty posts for the now-defunct Sparkle Shelf.

(It is also worth nothing that one of my best online friends also dove into the freelance world right around the time I did. Not the first time we bounced around web niches in sync with each other – Maybe she’ll be mama blogging next…)

Without getting too personal, what I bring in is typically more than half of our family’s income. This is due to my income being limitless in theory, although it has definitely been lacking since the baby was born. Balancing work and motherhood isn’t terribly difficult but finding the time to seek out new clients and opportunities is hard. As a result, money is more tight now than it was pre-baby, forcing me to be frugal and creative, but I still think it’s worth it to work for myself. The biggest downside is lack of socialization and falling into a yoga-pants-everyday rut, particularly in the winter months. I’m working on that!

I am grateful that I began freelancing at 20, before I had a family and responsibilities, back when everything was a lot more flexible. I credit my amazing husband, then just my boyfriend, for keeping us afloat in our first apartment together while I followed my passion (trite but true) and steadily turned it into my career. I never would have been able to pull this off had I started after we settled down to start our family, and it’s awesome that I now get to be the next best thing to a Stay At Home Mom.

How-to Score Freebies Online

Free Samples

Free samples are fairly easy to come by online. Logical Harmony does a weekly freebies roundup and you can also Google (“free beauty products”, “free baby products”) or scour the backs of print magazines for offers. Be wary of any offer that asks for credit card or other personal information. Most samples giveaways will ask for your name, address and email. Most samples you receive are one or two-time use trial sizes, but many can be worthwhile if saved for travel or a night out. Many times you also receive a coupon or two with your sample. I recently received some samples of John Frieda Root Awakening that I loved, and I find fragrance samples a really great way to try a new scent for a day or two without commitment.

Blog Giveaways

I have won quite a few items via online (blog) giveaways and it’s always worth the minimal time and effort it takes to enter. Although you can enter contests by huge brands and websites (Nylon Mag does lots of giveaways, for instance), I like to enter giveaways hosted by bloggers – the odds of winning are much higher but items can still retail from $50 to even hundreds of dollars. Obviously, the more giveaways you enter, the better your chance of winning. Many giveaways also give opportunities for extra entries. Some are quick and convenient (following the brand on Twitter) whereas some take more time and effort (blogging about the giveaway from your own site). For the giveaways I really want to win I take the time to complete all of the extra entries, even if it means subscribing to the same feed via both reader and email.

Some giveaways will let you tweet for extra entries, and some even let you submit a new tweet (and thus new entry) per day, or even per hour. For these giveaways (especially ones I really want), I bookmark the post in my web browser and visit daily.

You can find buttons to sites that frequently host giveaways in my sidebar, or try hitting up a search engine with “giveaway [month & year]” and see what pops up! Some items that I have won via giveaways include TOMS shoes, jeans, a humidifier, baby clothes and baby bottles. Some of my favorite blogs for giveaways are Denim Debutante, Fashion Fling, The Fashionable Housewife and Welcome to the Motherhood.

Aside from my favorite sites, I also keep a folder in my Google Reader exclusively for blogs that I know host lots of giveaways.

Stash Mama recently posted her tips for winning blog giveaways as well, with her own list of won items. :)

BzzAgent

CoverGirl BzzAgent swagBzzAgent allows you to try out new products for free. The site relies on WOM (word of mouth) marketing, and in return for swag you are asked to fill out fun and simple surveys about products you review and spread the bzz with friends online and off. What you are sent depends on your individual interests and status (based on completed surveys and campaigns) and can range from coupons to full size products. There is never any obligation to buy and you can link BzzAgent to your Facebook account. (Shipping is also free to you.) Some items that I have received via Bzz include L’Oreal and CoverGirl cosmetics and even bags of rice!

All of these methods are great for trying out free products or even scoring some major swag. Of course, you should still take time to research items and companies as if you were making a purchase – Whether or not you spend money, every time you show interest in an product or business you are casting your vote as a consumer.

How to Make Easy Money Online Via Surveys, Shopping, Referrals

01-13-2010 ** Categories: Personal Style / Tags: ,

For SAHMs (Stay At Home Moms) or women who work from home, there are lots of opportunities to bring in extra cash online, from blogging to selling handmade items on Etsy.  One easy way to boost your income is to use your social network to your advantage, referring friends to fill out surveys and shop as you do the same.  If you refer enough people, you’ll find you pull in checks without having to do any of the actual work yourself!

CashCrate is my favorite way to make quick cash online, because how much you make is really up to you. It’s totally tedious, but making $20 or more a month is really easy.  A little more invested time could easily double, triple, etc. that amount, and the more people you refer, the more you’ll rake in without even having to log into the site.  The payout threshold is just $20, meaning that is all you have to make to request payment.  The only downside to this site is that you will get swarmed with emails after signing up and filling out surveys, so I suggest setting up a free email account with Yahoo or Hotmail as your junk inbox.

When it comes to actually filling out surveys and such on CashCrate, use common sense – I have never had a problem with any security or privacy issues. You can ask to only be shown 100% Free offers, as there are tons of basic surveys you can get paid to fill out. You can also click Go Shopping to see which retailers will reward you for shopping – they might be places you are already spending money, so might as well get some of that cash back!

Inbox Dollars doesn’t spam you nearly as much as CashCrate, and you do have to click within emails to confirm receiving them, so it’s up to you whether you use a junk account or your primary email address. The payout threshold here is $30, and there is an automatic $5 credited to your account just for signing up.  The friend who referred me just got a check for $200.

Ideeli isn’t set up to make money, but it does give you a kickback when your friends shop! The site offers designer clothes and accessories at discount prices in short online sales that last from a few hours to a few days each.  I ordered some luxe lace-up Matisse Henna Gladiator Sandals last summer just using credit. Sign up for the designer sales, and get a $25 shopping credit whenever a referred friend makes a purchase.

Similarly, Beyond the Rack will give you a $10 shopping credit for referrals. Their sales run a bit cheaper, so it pays off.
