Alternative Housewife

J

I'm Janine, wife to Donny and mama to Sebastian (age 18 months). We live (with our annoying dog) in a simple, cozy apartment in Portland, Oregon, where we are working on building our home and our lives with style. I believe in buying secondhand, in basic and natural products, and in living fabulously on any budget. More about us.

Mama & Sebastian at Sesame DonutsSebastian - 9 months old - Sesame Donuts

Sesame Donuts with my boys. Today we were on the west side running errands and stopped into our favorite donut shop. Do not believe the hype about Voodoo Donuts. Sesame Donuts in Beaverton is much better! Sebastian tried his first donut today and especially loved a drink of whole cow’s milk.

My new Twitter name, @pdxstylemama. Alternativehousewife is too long for a Twitter handle and I wasn’t sure what else to go with but this one should stick, so follow me!

EdenFantasys. I write a lot of sponsored posts for them because I truly love their products & service. I have purchased gifts from them and this morning I placed an order for a back massager and organic massage oil. Because I spent over $100 (I received a gift card from the company) I qualified for free overnight shipping and am expecting my items tomorrow! I’m very excited.

Working out. I have committed to working out every day for the next 30 days. Tonight is day 3 and I am sore but loving it. I’m not being strict about my diet (um, donuts) as my goal is simply to tone up. Any weight loss is just an added bonus.

Microsoft Dragon Fruit pink wireless mouse

This Dragon Fruit Pink computer mouse. Or Pomegranate Red. My wireless mouse went kaput (possibly due to baby spit) and I need a new one for my laptop. I’m adding this one to my wish list.

Envirosax Oscar bag

This tote. I love Sesame Street (I’ve been putting on episodes lately “for Sebastian”) and this would be a great bag for a trip to the park or some quick errands with the baby. My first year ever trick-or-treating, I dressed up as Cookie Monster. Now that I’m grown I prefer Oscar, I guess because I’m a sucker for bad boys. I can’t  help it; I just want to fix him. Plus he has a sick house.

Brigid Brannagh

Red hair. After four seasons of Army Wives and obsessing over Brigid Brannagh’s perfect color, I’ve decided to do my own shade of red. Natural red is one of the few colors I’ve never really tried and I’m very excited. I’m planning to have it done early next month – Hopefully my stylish Ginger will make me a perfect Ginger. ;)

Dexter. I know I’m late to the party but Dexter is the latest TV show we’re getting into. Unfortunately Netflix only has the first two seasons streaming but luckily my sister owns the third on DVD. She and my dad have been Dexter fans since it started airing. Anyone else a fan of this show? (No spoilers!)

My fabulous blog readers. After my ranty FYF post last week, a couple of you hit my donation button to brighten my day and help keep me afloat! You know who you are & you are fabulous. As things stabilize (as they are already beginning to) I will be sure to pay it forward. :)

Things I Love Thursday: Mother’s Day Week & May Flowers

May 12, 2011 / 6 Comments

Turban-style headband

Dollar Tree headbands – I picked up a few new headbands from the dollar store this week, my favorite being this one with a turban-style knot. This is the definition of cheap chic and smart shopping.

Homemade crocheted hat

My new crocheted hat – Made by my mama and I’ve been wearing it every day since she finished it up. I love it. She is working on a hat for my husband next. (He wears a beanie almost every day.) I think I may put a big bejeweled brooch on mine if I can find one.

May Flowers

May flowers – Sunflowers from my mom and the pink ones from Donny. Mother’s Day was also my birthday and the 11th (yesterday) was our 2 year wedding anniversary! Hurrah!

Crystallized ginger – I’m obsessed with candied ginger again and could eat it all day long. It is sweet and spicy and I’m totally addicted.

Lakers being eliminated from the Playoffs! – In a major NBA upset, the Lakers were swept by the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. It almost makes up for the Mavs eliminating the Blazers in the first round.

Fubonn + Sebastian’s first trip to the grocery store – This week we visited Fubonn Shopping Center, which is the local Asian Shopping Center. We stopped at Meianna Bakery (They take food stamps/Oregon Trail!) and bought some sweet bread and amazing pastries. Sebastian and I have been enjoying a loaf with red bean. We also had bubble tea and walked around the supermarket. I love the smell of fish there; it reminds me of the docks on our annual camping trip.

Sebastian's first swing

Sebastian’s first trip to the park! - Donny and I took Sebastian to the park for the first time this week. He was not impressed with the swing at all but I still love this photo. It was a gorgeous day and the first time I’d been to the park near us, which is easy walking distance and a great park. I feel really lucky to have such a great place so close by. We went down the slide, took a walk with the stroller and stopped for a picnic table lunch of string cheese (Sebastian’s new favorite) and pineapple.

Sebastian is loving… – String cheese. Making spit faces/raspberries/fart noises. He loves to do this at us, especially while crawling over us or while standing in his play pen. He is still loving his toy laptop and being able to crawl very fast now. Today he started giggling at the pictures in a book, which is about the cutest thing ever.

Things I Love Thursday

Apr 28, 2011 / 9 Comments

x My new bangs. They are a little shorter than I wanted but my hair grows super fast so I’m not concerned. Blair Waldorf may be over headbands but I’m not – They are my go-to until the weather grows warm enough for floppy hats.

Carven Volcano Skirt

x Weather-printed clothing. The outer space trend is cute but ultimately not my style, but weather-inspired pieces are something I would legitimately rock. I’d love to represent my Portland-ness with a rain-printed skirt – Maybe it’s something I could DIY. Anyone know where to find t-shirts with weather scenes?

Sebastian - 7 Months

x This photo of Sebastian. I am not sure exactly what I like about it but it is one of my favorite captures of him. (Full size image here.) This was taken before his checkup on Tuesday, hanging out in the waiting room like a big boy! It seems like we were just in that waiting room with him as a bundled up tiny newborn. Now he weights 21+ pounds and his pediatrician says she won’t be surprised if he is walking by his 9 month visit. He took his shots like a champ, only crying for a moment and then nursed sitting in my lap.

Potty fail

x And this photo of Sebastian. This was an EC fail, as I had him sitting on the potty for too long as I weeded through my closet and he got bored. Thank god there was only pee in it, although it was after a nap and a good amount of pee. I’m not sure if he toppled off or purposely dived off the potty, as he does both.

x My mother. I called her this week when I was losing my mind with a screamy child and messy apartment. She swept in and fed him (BLW style!), then took him for a long, nap-provoking walk in the stroller she recently thrifted for $15. While she was here, she told me that she doesn’t ever criticize my parenting because I am “so great” with my baby. That meant a lot – I guess you never really stop wanting to please and impress your parents.

I’d love to know what you are loving this week!

New Hair Obsession

Jan 07, 2011 / 4 Comments

Khloe Kardashian red hair - People's Choice AwardsI am majorly digging on the newly red hair that Khloe Kardashian revealed at the 2011 People’s Choice Awards. She looks so naturally pretty here (in a dress by Alexander McQueen).

I seriously adore Kourtney Kardashian for being such a rad mothering role model and I love Khloe for her big mouth! All of the Kardashians have great style if only Kim would start wearing dresses in the correct size.

I also dig Lamar’s initials on Khloe’s right hand and would love to cop something similar – And how hot is her Judith Leiber clutch.

I would really, really love to try this hair color, but I’m not sure it will work with my skin tone, which is less fair. I also don’t really have the time to sit and have it done, although I’m sure my stylist would be up for the challenge.

What do you guys think of this look? – Could I rock it?
