She’s back in black

12-03-2011 ** Categories: Health and Beauty, Personal Style / Tags: ,

Technically I’m back in chocolate brown! I had made a pact not to dye my own hair (It makes it so much harder to change later) and I stuck to it. This week my lovely bestie Ginger hooked me up with a cut + color and I’m back to feeling like myself! I always feel this way after going back to my roots. I plan on cutting a bob once I lose the last 20 lbs of baby weight but for now I’m keeping the long locks and bangs. Tell me what you think! — First, the before photos…

Waiting for the busWaiting for the bus

Bassy and I took the bus across town for our beauty-slash-playdate. We killed time at the bus stop playing the hit game “Throw my hat on the ground over and over!” He has a really freaking cute houndstooth winter hat but literally would not keep it on his head long enough for a photo. At least it kept him entertained – Lately he does not want to stay in the stroller/shopping cart and can be quite a (happy & fun) handful.

See those roots? No fun. Sebastian is chugging down arsenic or something.

Hair color in progress

… A bit later, letting the new color set in.

And the final results, + some new makeup by Bed Head and my new Flesh Tunnel jade plugs!

That’s framed Maxim photos of Cobie Smulders behind me in my bathroom.

I’m really loving this new look – It’s amazing what a difference a makeover can have on your entire outlook!

Thanks again to Ginger for the great job — If you are in the Portland area and looking for affordable hair and/or makeup services, check out her stuff at Devil’s Haircuts, or send me a message and I’ll get you in contact. She is a working mom, sometimes working from a salon/shop and other times straight from her home. On some occasions she can even come to you!

New hair and maybe new freedom

Believe it or not (depending on your parenting style), Thursday was the longest that I have left my baby since he was born. He will be 10 months on the 23rd and the longest we’d been apart prior to this week was three hours, and that was just once. Yesterday I spentĀ  seven hours of freedom with my friend/stylist Ginger, hanging out in her new salon space, while Sebastian had Daddy time at home. I am still without a phone and went the whole stretch without checking in once. It was actually pretty liberating. When I got home and snuggled my SeaBass I was overcome with emotion and he showered me with his version of sloppy open-mouthed kisses.

Sebastian had a fabulous day with his dad. Apparently the little stinker will take TWO two-hour naps for my husband. Without boob or a bottle. He also only used two diapers within seven hours, catching pee and a poo in the potty. Needless to say I am leaving Sebastian with his dad more often! I have known that my husband was a fully capable father but I have to admit that he did so well today, I felt a little bit inadequate. I guess that a teeny part of me liked being the only one who could do it all.

New red hair color
New red hair color

As for my hair, Ginger is running her one-woman biz, Devil’s Haircuts, out of a beauty supply store & salon in SE Portland. The first go at a weave of red shades ended up with carrot-orange roots so we had to go to a darker red than planned. We also got my shaved side started in a leopard print pattern, to be finished later. Devil’s Haircuts operates out of Wood Pro Beauty Supply in PDX and if you tell Ginger that Janine sent you, I know she’ll give you a wicked discount. Along with cut, color & style, she offers eyelash extensions and makeup.

Leopard print hair pattern

Honestly, I still prefer to take Sebastian with me where I go, but it was nice to have uninterrupted grown-up time. We never would have gotten through two hair processes with our kids in tow. Next time I’ll make sure wine is on the agenda as well.

TiLT (Mother’s Day Week & May Flowers)

Turban-style headband

Dollar Tree headbands – I picked up a few new headbands from the dollar store this week, my favorite being this one with a turban-style knot. This is the definition of cheap chic and smart shopping.

Homemade crocheted hat

My new crocheted hat – Made by my mama and I’ve been wearing it every day since she finished it up. I love it. She is working on a hat for my husband next. (He wears a beanie almost every day.) I think I may put a big bejeweled brooch on mine if I can find one.

May Flowers

May flowers – Sunflowers from my mom and the pink ones from Donny. Mother’s Day was also my birthday and the 11th (yesterday) was our 2 year wedding anniversary! Hurrah!

Crystallized ginger – I’m obsessed with candied ginger again and could eat it all day long. It is sweet and spicy and I’m totally addicted.

Lakers being eliminated from the Playoffs! – In a major NBA upset, the Lakers were swept by the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. It almost makes up for the Mavs eliminating the Blazers in the first round.

Fubonn + Sebastian’s first trip to the grocery store – This week we visited Fubonn Shopping Center, which is the local Asian Shopping Center. We stopped at Meianna Bakery (They take food stamps/Oregon Trail!) and bought some sweet bread and amazing pastries. Sebastian and I have been enjoying a loaf with red bean. We also had bubble tea and walked around the supermarket. I love the smell of fish there; it reminds me of the docks on our annual camping trip.

Sebastian's first swing

Sebastian’s first trip to the park! - Donny and I took Sebastian to the park for the first time this week. He was not impressed with the swing at all but I still love this photo. It was a gorgeous day and the first time I’d been to the park near us, which is easy walking distance and a great park. I feel really lucky to have such a great place so close by. We went down the slide, took a walk with the stroller and stopped for a picnic table lunch of string cheese (Sebastian’s new favorite) and pineapple.

Sebastian is loving… – String cheese. Making spit faces/raspberries/fart noises. He loves to do this at us, especially while crawling over us or while standing in his play pen. He is still loving his toy laptop and being able to crawl very fast now. Today he started giggling at the pictures in a book, which is about the cutest thing ever.

What are you loving this week?

TiLT (things I love thursday)

x My new bangs. They are a little shorter than I wanted but my hair grows super fast so I’m not concerned. Blair Waldorf may be over headbands but I’m not – They are my go-to until the weather grows warm enough for floppy hats.

Carven Volcano Skirt

x Weather-printed clothing. The outer space trend is cute but ultimately not my style, but weather-inspired pieces are something I would legitimately rock. I’d love to represent my Portland-ness with a rain-printed skirt – Maybe it’s something I could DIY. Anyone know where to find t-shirts with weather scenes?

Sebastian - 7 Months

x This photo of Sebastian. I am not sure exactly what I like about it but it is one of my favorite captures of him. (Full size image here.) This was taken before his checkup on Tuesday, hanging out in the waiting room like a big boy! It seems like we were just in that waiting room with him as a bundled up tiny newborn. Now he weights 21+ pounds and his pediatrician says she won’t be surprised if he is walking by his 9 month visit. He took his shots like a champ, only crying for a moment and then nursed sitting in my lap.

Potty fail

x And this photo of Sebastian. This was an EC fail, as I had him sitting on the potty for too long as I weeded through my closet and he got bored. Thank god there was only pee in it, although it was after a nap and a good amount of pee. I’m not sure if he toppled off or purposely dived off the potty, as he does both.

x My mother. I called her this week when I was losing my mind with a screamy child and messy apartment. She swept in and fed him (BLW style!), then took him for a long, nap-provoking walk in the stroller she recently thrifted for $15. While she was here, she told me that she doesn’t ever criticize my parenting because I am “so great” with my baby. That meant a lot – I guess you never really stop wanting to please and impress your parents.

I’d love to know what you are loving this week!
