Happy Birthday to Me
My 26th birthday was on Tuesday, and I celebrated early by having my hair done. Sebastian and I spent the weekend with friends, and my sister Natalie, for a pro hair & makeup job as well as a play date. I enjoyed hanging out with my lovelies and chopping off a good amount of hair! I didn’t plan to lose quite so much length but I can’t resist the dramatic when it comes to changing up my look! Plus I know my new cut will look killer as it grows out.
I’ve already received lots of positive feedback on social media, but here are a couple of photos from our hair date day:

Hair before and after. I feel that the shorter length is more flattering at this point on my slow & agonizing post-partum weight loss journey, but that’s another post for another day.

Halfway through my makeup job. Definitely not an everyday look! But it is really fun to look flawless even for one evening. (Even if that evening is just going back home with your husband and toddler.)

Who looks older? – My lovely sister “Aunt Nattie” lives about an hour away and we don’t see her often enough. Sebastian adores her and we look at her photo often.

A quick photo before saying goodbye. (Excuse the redeye.) Superman on the left with the mismatched socks is Ginger’s daughter Ophelia. The kiddos are about a year and a half apart.
On my actual birthday day, we had homemade burgers and store-bought red velvet cake. I have to confess, I think that watching Sebastian tear into the cake was my favorite part! Donny also bought me flowers. A simple & perfect day.
If you are in the Portland area and need your hair done, please check out the Devil’s Haircuts Facebook page or contact me directly for help setting up an appointment. Ginger also provides hair and makeup for events. This summer I believe she will be offering waxing and lash extensions as well.

The salon finish that will blow you away
I have a history of hair straightening. Back in junior high my mother would straighten my hair for me – I can clearly remember her blow-drying each strand meticulously before a school dance or football game. Eventually I graduated to my own hot tools, which primarily included drugstore brand curling irons. There was a steep learning curve, with lots of neck and forehead burns along the way! Some of my friends were much more skilled than myself, leading to countless makeover attempts — I still love a good makeover today!
Quality matters. I was an adult before I tried my first professional-grade hair straightener, and I was instantly sold. The beauty is in the details – High-quality styling tools heat up faster and distribute heat evenly, clamp hair more firmly without snagging, and the cords don’t get twisted up in knots. Nowadays I rarely straighten all of my hair, but I routinely smooth my ends and tame my bangs. Having the best tool for the job really makes a huge difference.

ghd (good hair day) is a high-end UK hair company known for its celebrity clients and top-quality hot stylers. Their line offers specific tools for varying hair lengths and types — The ghd IV mini styler is the perfect choice for shorter hair, including men’s, ideal for creating curls, flicks and fringes. She’s back in black
Technically I’m back in chocolate brown! I had made a pact not to dye my own hair (It makes it so much harder to change later) and I stuck to it. This week my lovely bestie Ginger hooked me up with a cut + color and I’m back to feeling like myself! I always feel this way after going back to my roots. I plan on cutting a bob once I lose the last 20 lbs of baby weight but for now I’m keeping the long locks and bangs. Tell me what you think! — First, the before photos…

Bassy and I took the bus across town for our beauty-slash-playdate. We killed time at the bus stop playing the hit game “Throw my hat on the ground over and over!” He has a really freaking cute houndstooth winter hat but literally would not keep it on his head long enough for a photo. At least it kept him entertained – Lately he does not want to stay in the stroller/shopping cart and can be quite a (happy & fun) handful.

See those roots? No fun. Sebastian is chugging down arsenic or something.

… A bit later, letting the new color set in.
And the final results, + some new makeup by Bed Head and my new Flesh Tunnel jade plugs!

That’s framed Maxim photos of Cobie Smulders behind me in my bathroom.
I’m really loving this new look – It’s amazing what a difference a makeover can have on your entire outlook!
Thanks again to Ginger for the great job — If you are in the Portland area and looking for affordable hair and/or makeup services, check out her stuff at Devil’s Haircuts, or send me a message and I’ll get you in contact. She is a working mom, sometimes working from a salon/shop and other times straight from her home. On some occasions she can even come to you!
New hair and maybe new freedom
Believe it or not (depending on your parenting style), Thursday was the longest that I have left my baby since he was born. He will be 10 months on the 23rd and the longest we’d been apart prior to this week was three hours, and that was just once. Yesterday I spentĀ seven hours of freedom with my friend/stylist Ginger, hanging out in her new salon space, while Sebastian had Daddy time at home. I am still without a phone and went the whole stretch without checking in once. It was actually pretty liberating. When I got home and snuggled my SeaBass I was overcome with emotion and he showered me with his version of sloppy open-mouthed kisses.
Sebastian had a fabulous day with his dad. Apparently the little stinker will take TWO two-hour naps for my husband. Without boob or a bottle. He also only used two diapers within seven hours, catching pee and a poo in the potty. Needless to say I am leaving Sebastian with his dad more often! I have known that my husband was a fully capable father but I have to admit that he did so well today, I felt a little bit inadequate. I guess that a teeny part of me liked being the only one who could do it all.

As for my hair, Ginger is running her one-woman biz, Devil’s Haircuts, out of a beauty supply store & salon in SE Portland. The first go at a weave of red shades ended up with carrot-orange roots so we had to go to a darker red than planned. We also got my shaved side started in a leopard print pattern, to be finished later. Devil’s Haircuts operates out of Wood Pro Beauty Supply in PDX and if you tell Ginger that Janine sent you, I know she’ll give you a wicked discount. Along with cut, color & style, she offers eyelash extensions and makeup.

Honestly, I still prefer to take Sebastian with me where I go, but it was nice to have uninterrupted grown-up time. We never would have gotten through two hair processes with our kids in tow. Next time I’ll make sure wine is on the agenda as well.
