Mama Style: Fall Fashion 2011

09-07-2011 ** Categories: Personal Style / Tags: ,

Fall is the season for fashion, and fashion bloggers. I used to write primarily about style and trends, and now that I have a kid, the pressure is on to look great and put-together. I love summer but am definitely excited to wear layers and not worry about sweating through my clothes. Here are my favorite fashion trends for fall 2011.

I am all about crisp white blouses for fall. Button-ups are breastfeeding-friendly and there are white tops to complement all bust sizes. I love this white blouse worn with a leather skirt or above paired with skinnies. They always have a zil of these in secondhand shops and I will be stocking up this season.

Carrie Bradshaw polka dots in Paris

I also love the classic Parisian look of stripes and polka dots. They can be worn together or separate but in my opinion, polka dots are one of the easiest looks to get wrong. To avoid looking childish I recommend large dots and careful color choices. Done right, stripes also look great paired with the last of your summer florals. Chunky tights and cardigans can easily stretch your warm-weather wardrobe through December.

H&M Poncho

Ponchos are a casual trend that I am really loving for this fall. Go with something loose and flowy for morning coffee or wear a more slim fitting poncho to replace the traditional blazer. I am a big fan of prints like the one above (H&M).

Burnt colors are a big trend for fall 2011. Colors like mustard yellow are perfect for transitioning from summer to fall and add a pop of color to your autumn neutrals. Think the rust shades of falling leaves.

Sheer maxi with tank dress

One especially edgy look I’m dying to try is sheer maxi dresses. I would love to wear one over a slip or tank dress like this.

I also love leather harnesses and similar styles as statement accessories – They remind me of the so-loved studded belts that were a staple of my high school wardrobe.

What are your fashion picks for this fall? If you have a child, how has motherhood changed your style (for better or for worse)?

What are the top 5 Spring trends that you are looking forward to seeing/sporting this season?

This post is almost a full date late because my baby has hit a clingy phase where he refuses to be put down/not touching me. The only way to catch a break is to get him down for a nap or hand him a piece of food. Anyways, I already wrote a post on spring 2011 trends that I’m most excited about, but here are some specific pieces I’m hoping to work in. ASOS floral mini

1. Floppy black hat! I have one that I bought for $2 at Target last year and I’m hoping that I can make work for me. I am just waiting for the weather here to warm up.

2. Rope jewelry – A rope statement necklace is perfect all spring/summer long, no other jewelry required.

3. Floral mini skirts, both normal- and high-waisted. I’d love to sew my own but don’t really have the time – I can definitely alter some thrifted styles into what I want though!

4. Maxi dresses – This is perfect mama style and figure-flattering. I’ll be looking out for dresses with v-necks or button-down tops that allow for easy breastfeeding access – luckily long, open necklines can also help you look long and lean. I’d love to find some vintage styles but in all likelihood Ross will be my best bet – They typically have an amaze dress section.

5. Long, skinny belts tied like this. Realistically hard to pull off with nursing-friendly fashions but I’ll do my damnedest.

I’m still just over 20 pounds from my goal weight (thanks, Baby) but thankfully spring styles are breezy and forgiving. I’ve been following a few new style bloggers who are closer to my current weight and have been very inspired!

Anyone know of any other weekly memes that are fashion-related? I love the motivation but FBFF isn’t my favorite group… Do check out Tashina’s spring picks though!

Spring 2011 Trends I’m Looking Forward To

I’m trying to make the time to dress up everyday even if just to get the mail, but it’s hard when Portland is still very wet and dreary. I can’t wait until it actually feels like spring and I can venture out to explore my downtown Gresham neighborhood, and I’m especially excited to put together my warm-weather look.

My favorite style trends for spring 2011:Mixed Up Prints Spring 2011

Hair barrettes – I am so excited for the hair barrette trend. An easy, perfect way to add personality to your look. DIY a barrette or pin a vintage brooch into an updo for a glam punch.

Florals and lace – I love the juxtaposition of more classically feminine colors and textures with utilitarian pieces. Think leather jackets over flower-print dresses and friendship bracelets with steel hardware (See this statement bracelet or DIY this woven chain bracelet).

Elle has declared an Asia Society a theme for spring 2011. I’m ready with my cherry blossoms and my Asian baby! The 70′s are also an inspiration point, with highly saturated color (think jewel tones) and tropical prints forecast to be popular. (I predict street style bloggers creatively rocking Hawaiian shirts.)

Another trend I really like is mixed up prints (photo right from Glamour), with my personal favorite prints being florals and stripes. Top colors for spring include honeysuckle, nudes and neutrals. The nautical trend has also rolled over from last year – I adore details like sailor-inspired TOMS shoes (stripes & wedges) and rope jewelry.

Fall Fashion Trends 2010

Aside from, you know, having a gorgeous baby, I’m really excited about clothes and shopping this September!

Fall’s colors aren’t too different than the paletteĀ  for Spring/Summer, which is OK with me because I love gold, coral and turquoise shades.

Pantone Color Trends Fall 2010

I can’t wait to get back into skinny jeans, and I’m also still big on boyfriend jeans and excited to buy some jeans in saturated hues, all Fall 2010 denim trends.

Philip Lim Poncho

Also big for Fall 2010: Cozy cardigans, chunky belted sweaters, sharp blazers, animal prints (again; especially leopard), fringe and gypsy details. I am really excited about capes and ponchos. I also love camel as the neutral color for Fall.

I’m thinking lots of structured pieces in neutral colors, topped off with dramatic gypsy jewelry and scarves, decadent lace and fringe combos, and all of the boots I can stuff my feet into!

I also really want a luscious designer handbag to sport along with my Mat & Natt diaper bag (which I’ve been using and loving as a laptop bag for the present). I would love a spacious bag in a rich camel color. It also looks as though backpacks are making a comeback, a look that I’m loving the more I see it.
