Starting Cloth Diapers!

11-06-2010 ** Categories: Baby, Product Reviews / Tags: , ,

I can’t remember when I decided I was going to use cloth diapers. I’m sure what got me was the cuteness, although cloth diapering has lots of perks – healthier, more earth-friendly, ultimately cheaper.

We started off with disposable diapers as the dipes in our small stash were way too big for a seven pound baby. We used Seventh Generation and also Kroger Comforts Baby disposables. Not my favorite thing to put on my kid but at least Seventh Gen are chlorine-free and the neither have a gross fragrance. (I recommend both over the usual name brand diapers. The hospital sent us home with a bag of Pampers and they had so much fragrance that Sebastian smelled like them hours after having one on. Pampers = Disgusting.) Despite my love of all things Seventh Gen, after six weeks of walking out smelly trash, I was excited to see that he now fits into most of our cloth diapers.

We have been using pocket diapers so far and I love them, although I end up stuffing them with extra inserts or prefolds to make them last through the whole day – We only have six pocket diapers so far and newborns go through around 12 changes per day. Used over a prefold, a pocket diaper works as a cover. We have some more cloth diapers on the way (a fitted and two covers) and I’m planning on buying a lot more now that I know how much I like them. I’m doing diaper laundry once or twice a day – Luckily, our apartment complex pays for water. ;) I’m using & loving Rockin’ Green detergent. I’m finding cloth diapering fun and flexible so far.

The pocket cloth diapers we have now are by BumGenius, FuzziBunz, AMP, and Happy Heinys. The Happy Heinys is the only one we purchased ourselves, and is definitely my favorite – Moo cow! I also like the BumGenius, as I prefer Velcro to snaps.

Sebastian Moo Cow Happy Heinys DIY cloth baby wipes solution

Before we started our cloth diapering journey, I was already using cloth wipes (Kissaluvs) and Thirsties Booty Luster spray. The spray quickly ran out so last night I mixed up this easy DIY wipe solution recipe.  I used Earth Mama Angel Baby body wash and body oil and just used my first soaked cloth wipe – Let me say, I am in love! I will definitely be making more batches of these wipes. (As for the actual cloth wipes, I am open to trying more brands. One thing that annoys me about Kissas wipes is the scratchy tag attached to every single one.)

Overall, cloth trumps disposables. Between my new wipe solution and being exclusively cloth diapered now, Sebastian’s bum is already less red at each change. I end up changing him more often because he fusses the instant he pees rather than after going a few times in a more absorbent (due to gross chemicals!) disposable. As long as the gussets around the legs are tight, there are no leaks in the cloth. With disposables there were lots of up-the-back leaks, which are especially unpleasant for me as we co-sleep.

Dirtied cloth dipes in a wet bag also don’t stink up the nursery, whereas just a few disposables hanging out in there could be smelled throughout the entire upstairs.

I can definitely see why there are so many CD addicted mamas out there and even several blogs devoted to just cloth diapers. If you’re considering cloth diapering yourself, don’t be intimidated! I read a lot about cloth diapering before starting but the most helpful to me was looking up how-to cloth diapers (by specific styles/brands) on YouTube.

The Importance of Organic: Beauty Products

07-29-2010 ** Categories: Home Design and Decor / Tags: , ,

We often talk about the importance of eating organic, but many women slather on beauty products as often (more often?) as they take in a meal. I’ve always loved eating clean organic produce simply for the way it tastes and feels, but being pregnant gave me a reason to be even more diligent. As I was re-accessing my fridge, I also took a hard look at my beauty routine.

My Current Shampoo: Yes to CucumbersI started by switching to brands I trust for shampoo and lotions, my top choice being Yes to Carrots. Their website discloses all ingredients and I have found the company more than willing to interact with myself/consumers. Since becoming pregnant, I have also developed a love for Earth Mama Angel Baby products.

I feel like I’d be lying if I didn’t mention the huge “emergency” bottle of Tresemme shampoo under our sink, but the majority of products – and especially any we have brought into the home in the past eight months – are choices that I am proud of. Like with food, every change counts. Chemicals in beauty products are in small amounts (it’s why the companies get away with it) but build up with each toxic product you use. If you aren’t sure about a particular product, I encourage you to look it up, even if the brand has a ‘green’ reputation. Also: The words “organic” and especially “natural” are not regulated, so look for products marked as “USDA Certified Organic” to avoid greenwashing.

Buzzword: Paraben-free. Why are parabens bad? “Parabens imitate the chemical makeup of our hormones and can cause the body to over react or react to the chemicals which it thinks are hormones and consequently won’t produce enough natural hormones for the body to properly function.” (Examiner)

I’d heard awhile ago about the Cosmetics Database but was kind of scared to try it before this week, and for good reason – the results are scary. Knowledge is power but that doesn’t mean it’s pretty. For instance, I spent the better part of 2004-2005 slathered in The Body Shop’s Mango Body Butter. Even Burt’s Bees, which I had trusted wholly in the past, doesn’t score great, and neither do LUSH products. I don’t take necessarily take all of the ratings at face value but I think they’re worth considering, and I’ll definitely be avoiding any products rated above a 6 (especially while pregnant / breastfeeding).

SJP Covet Fragrance

The last big hidden toxin in my bathroom is fragrance. Seeing my fave SJP Covet fragrance rated at a toxic 10 on Cosmetics Database is an eye-opener, so my next mission is to replace my (and the husband’s) scents with healthier alternatives. I’m not going to toss my remaining parfum but rather save it for special occasions and use sparingly (and not buy them again). It is no surprise that perfumes and colognes are so toxic, as it is the fragrance in most bath and beauty products that makes them so unsafe.

Some products require possible toxins as their active ingredients (many acne products, for instance) but it’s hard to justify having even possibly hazardous chemicals in body wash and perfume. Like with the food industry, the fucked up part is that truly safe products are the exception and there is no rule that toxic products carry any warning.

Some products don’t have a comparable organic and/or natural substitute, but using those that do I can feel the difference (in my hair, skin) as much as you can feel the difference when eating clean and organic, which is a much bigger motivator for me than fear.

How much do you worry about what you put on your body? What are your favorite safe/organic beauty products? Any products you can’t live without even though you know they likely contain toxins?

I received A Little Something for Mama-To-Be*, which includes a Happy Feet foot soak, Natural Stretch Oil and Mint Herbal Lip Balm. I can honestly say that I love this set. Natural Stretch Oil is better than Palmer’s in every way and makes you feel truly pampered, and I intend to save the Mint Herbal Lip Balm for my labor kit. My favorite is the Happy Feet soak, which I have used both in my small foot spa and while soaking my entire body in the bathtub. It feels amazing and smells even better, and with every use the smell fills my entire apartment.
