I can’t remember when I decided I was going to use cloth diapers. I’m sure what got me was the cuteness, although cloth diapering has lots of perks – healthier, more earth-friendly, ultimately cheaper.
We started off with disposable diapers as the dipes in our small stash were way too big for a seven pound baby. We used Seventh Generation and also Kroger Comforts Baby disposables. Not my favorite thing to put on my kid but at least Seventh Gen are chlorine-free and the neither have a gross fragrance. (I recommend both over the usual name brand diapers. The hospital sent us home with a bag of Pampers and they had so much fragrance that Sebastian smelled like them hours after having one on. Pampers = Disgusting.) Despite my love of all things Seventh Gen, after six weeks of walking out smelly trash, I was excited to see that he now fits into most of our cloth diapers.
We have been using pocket diapers so far and I love them, although I end up stuffing them with extra inserts or prefolds to make them last through the whole day – We only have six pocket diapers so far and newborns go through around 12 changes per day. Used over a prefold, a pocket diaper works as a cover. We have some more cloth diapers on the way (a fitted and two covers) and I’m planning on buying a lot more now that I know how much I like them. I’m doing diaper laundry once or twice a day – Luckily, our apartment complex pays for water.
I’m using & loving Rockin’ Green detergent. I’m finding cloth diapering fun and flexible so far.
The pocket cloth diapers we have now are by BumGenius, FuzziBunz
, AMP, and Happy Heinys
. The Happy Heinys is the only one we purchased ourselves, and is definitely my favorite – Moo cow! I also like the BumGenius, as I prefer Velcro to snaps.
Before we started our cloth diapering journey, I was already using cloth wipes (Kissaluvs) and Thirsties Booty Luster spray. The spray quickly ran out so last night I mixed up this easy DIY wipe solution recipe. I used Earth Mama Angel Baby body wash and body oil and just used my first soaked cloth wipe – Let me say, I am in love! I will definitely be making more batches of these wipes. (As for the actual cloth wipes, I am open to trying more brands. One thing that annoys me about Kissas wipes is the scratchy tag attached to every single one.)
Overall, cloth trumps disposables. Between my new wipe solution and being exclusively cloth diapered now, Sebastian’s bum is already less red at each change. I end up changing him more often because he fusses the instant he pees rather than after going a few times in a more absorbent (due to gross chemicals!) disposable. As long as the gussets around the legs are tight, there are no leaks in the cloth. With disposables there were lots of up-the-back leaks, which are especially unpleasant for me as we co-sleep.
Dirtied cloth dipes in a wet bag also don’t stink up the nursery, whereas just a few disposables hanging out in there could be smelled throughout the entire upstairs.
I can definitely see why there are so many CD addicted mamas out there and even several blogs devoted to just cloth diapers. If you’re considering cloth diapering yourself, don’t be intimidated! I read a lot about cloth diapering before starting but the most helpful to me was looking up how-to cloth diapers (by specific styles/brands) on YouTube.

I started by switching to brands I trust for shampoo and lotions, my top choice being
