Mama Style Must-Have: Tunics

Posted on | January 22, 2013 | 6 Comments

Pregnant now with my second child, my body seems to be changing even more dramatically than during my first pregnancy. Although I’ll do my best to get back in shape, I also know that some of these changes are permanent. With each baby I seem to be losing my slim teenage shape (OK, it’s long gone by this point) and shifting into something more womanly. There are pros and cons to this body transformation. One challenging yet exciting aspect of a changing figure is getting to restructure my style. Completely different cuts and styles are flattering now — Tunics, for instance.

Tunics

A well-cut tunic looks amazing on a curvier figure, and they are also a comfortable and stylish option for new mamas, a perfect staple for pregnancy and beyond. I especially like those with a lower cut, accentuating new curves and drawing the eye to your best features. A stretchy or button-down neckline can even allow for easy breastfeeding without compromising on style. Their lightweight style is perfect for spring/summer, and for helping new moms (and anyone else!) look effortlessly put-together.

I love a simple tunic, with or without a skinny belt, layered over leggings or a relaxed skinny jean. Throw your hair up into an easy top knot and dress the look up or down with cute sneakers, flats, or a pair of boots. For me, a big pair of gold hoop earrings would complete this look!

I need more tunics in my life, ever since my boot shopping spree last month!

Its funny you say that but I feel like maybe its because of my height and the way im proportioned but before I had my baby, I was slimmer, still curvy but definitely slimmer and I could wear tunics ALL THE TIME and it was a favourite staple but now after the baby, I lost all the baby weight and actually weigh less but my curves are more womanly and pronounced so when I wear tunics, I look heavier and shorter. All the tunics I owned had to be donated :( , a very sad day.

I have a major obsession with tunics & oversized shirts… I raided goodwill the other day and purchased about 4 mens size L flannel button downs & have been wearing them with leggings :) so comfortable, and (I think) I look cute!

I read that you’re planning a new blog.. Is that still in the works? I’m excited to read more!

Are you fairly tall? I’m only 5’2 so I’m stuck trying to camouflage even the tiniest amount of weight gain. Being petite, every 5 extra pounds looks like 20. — I think that everything looks good when you’re tall and thin! And oh, what I would give to get back to my pre-baby weight, let alone under it! I’d gladly buy a whole new wardrobe. :)

    Thanks for commenting. <3

I should run out and do that! A bunch of huge mens shirts, and some extra large belts that I can tie just above this baby bump. Thanks for the inspiration!

Yes, I’m planning a new blog, but having trouble thinking of a name! I will still be writing here, but the new blog will be devoted to style and be more personal. I’ve been thinking of launching a parenting blog as well but not sure if that’s biting off more than I can chew. I’m afraid of alienating people and losing readers if I bounce around from posts about housework to parenting to shopping etc. I have some major brainstorming and organizing to do. Hopefully I’ll have something new up soon!

I wish I was tall, it is seriously the only thing I wish I could change about myself. I am 5 feet, fucking flat haha. If I was 5′ 10″, I wouldnt have to nearly care as much about certain wardrobe pieces. Maybe I am just really bad at dressing up tunics. I have to wear everything fitted or I look sloppy.
