Coconut Oil as Diaper Cream

We are yet to encounter any diaper rashes with Sebastian. We cloth diaper, and he is very sensitive to being wet, resulting in many changes a day. Once in awhile his bum does get a little red, and we prevent further irritation by slathering on a layer of Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil. Coconut oil is moisturizing and safe for cloth diapers (Many commercial diaper creams can cause cloth diapers to repel liquid rather than absorb it) and we typically get a big grin when we apply it – Baby approved.
Coconut oil is kept in a small (recycled) glass jar next to the wipes near the changing table. The coconut oil is a solid at below 76 degrees but turns to liquid almost instantly when scooped up with fingers.

In the pic: Kissas cloth diaper wipes in homemade wipe solution. Coconut oil bottom balm. Babo Botanicals baby lotion.
A bit of coconut oil can also be added to diaper wipe solution in lieu of other body oil. It also makes a great moisturizer for kids and adults. I’ve used it in place of petroleum jelly, as lip balm and cuticle cream.

Where do you buy this stuff? Everyone has been telling me about it and no one has said where you can acquire it.

It’s SO crazy that you posted this today. I was just googling use of coconut oil in cloth wipe wash last night!

I am considering using cloth diapers for baby #2 on the way. How many do you have in your arsenal? I am wondering how many I’d need to buy in order to feel like I have enough.
Also, how many times a day or week are you laundering them?

We are currently using 7 pocket diapers and doing diaper laundry 2x a day. It isn’t ideal, but pocket diapers are expensive! I’m trying to build my cloth stash through giveaways. Pocket dipes are great though, as they keep Baby feeling dry – One pocket diaper stuffed with two inserts keeps Sebastian dry overnight (approx 8 hours).
We are also getting into gDiapers, which require less laundry because you don’t necessarily have to wash the cover even every day. For my next baby we will likely use the newborn sized gDiapers for the first few weeks.
I suggest buying one or two of each kind of diaper you are interested in and go from there – There is nothing wrong with alternating between cloth and disposables.
