Thrifting, thrifting, and more thrifting

The weather around Portland has been on-off sunny & rainy this week and we are doing what we can to avoid stir-craziness. In the past few days we have walked through several thrift stores, including the grand opening of a new Salvation Army where we spun a wheel for a shopping discount and Sebastian got a balloon! We had a lot of fun going up and down the aisles – the Salvation Army Superstore even has a cafe! – and made out with some great finds.

Thrift haul - Dr. Scholls

Liz Claiborne wrap stretch top, $9 (Deseret Industries). I am in love with this shirt! Had to have it. And that is my new thrifting criteria. I usually do well but do occasionally end up with things that I just end up turning around & donating. Pointless! Only buying what I can’t stand to leave on the rack will open up my budget for the stuff I know I really want.

Dr. Scholl’s Tassel Loafers,$4 (Deseret Industries). These were brand new – They still had tape around the tassels. Apparently these are from the 80′s and thus considered vintage. They are really comfy!

Steven Contessa Snow Leopard bag
Steven Contessa Snow Leopard bag - Inside

Am I the only one who comes home and immediately looks up the details/retail value of my thrift finds? This bag is in pitiful condition (a bit of wear on the outside, and stained lining) but I’m still happy with it: Steven by Steve Madden ‘Contessa – Large’ Calf Hair Satchel in Snow Leopard. This might be my new winter bag. $3 (Deseret Industries).

Tiny Talls vintage cards

I adore these cards, which I picked up for just $1.25 (Salvation Army). The copyright dates are from 1968 and there are assorted cards for various occasions. That elephant card on top is probably my favorite, although there are a few “For my wife” humor cards that remind me of Mad Men.

Lastly, this little yellow blazer for Sebastian, $2 (Deseret Industries), complete with an embroidered anchor on the breast. It even looks good with athletic shorts!

My favorite thrift shop finds a new location

As of October 1st, Chase Me Again thrift store has relocated to 2nd & Hood in downtown Gresham. They had quickly overflowed their old spot and I was super excited to check out the new digs last week. Donny and Sebastian came with me to shop around and shoot some photos and we were not disappointed! Donny scored a pair of RVCA jeans for just $3 and I picked up an Asian-inspired graphic tee for just two bucks. Sebastian toddled around and tested out the well-priced kids section. I love that the shop owners recognize us and always make the effort to greet us and pump Zeb for smiles. They are good people doing great work and their prices are phenomenal, especially considering that their selection is much more hand-picked and cultivated than Goodwill or other similar stores. Their passion is obvious and makes for a really fun shopping atmosphere.

Sebastian’s BePE Baby non-skid slippers are the only shoes that he will keep on his feet – I highly recommend them. ~ I may have to go back for this Simply Vera  dress (right) if it’s still there this week – I’m kicking myself that I didn’t at least try it on!

Wish I’d found these pants in the spring – I think I could totally pull them off! ~ By the way, the totally 90′s Calvin Klein denim mini I’m wearing here is from Chase Me Again (I think it was $1.50!), as is the braided leather belt.

Could this be summer?

I cannot believe it is July already. The weather just got warm here and we’re having a blast playing with Sebastian, being outside and even just running errands. Yesterday I let Bass crawl around bottomless in Grandma’s garden and today he splashed around in a fountain at the farmers market. Farmers markets and yard sales are some of my favorite ways to spend a summer day.

Tree 'climbing' with Dada

Better than yard sales are multi family yard sales. When my husband alerted me that there was a huge sale going on just blocks away, I knew that I had to scope it out. My mom and I stopped by the large spread and took turns playing with Sebastian while the other foraged through tables & racks. We didn’t come out with a ton, but did pretty well for only spending $5!

Where the Wild Things Are hand puppets

My mom found these Where the Wild Things Are puppets for Sebastian – Aren’t they perfect? Max’s hood even pulls up and down. As I’ve mentioned before, my mother is the person who taught me to shop secondhand. Literally 50% or more of what Sebastian owns are things my mother found for cheaps. :)

Yard sale shirts haul

I found these four tops at $1 each. The striped cardi is by Express and worth more than a couple bucks on its own. I can’t wait to wear the plaid button-up camping next month, even if I do have to fight my husband for it. (It fits us both.)

I am really proud of myself for expanding my style from just neutrals to more patterns and textures lately. A month ago I never would have picked up this hot pink shirt with eyelet detailing. Since my pregnancy I also don’t bother to look at size tags at all. How something is designed to fit is not always the way it will look the best on you. Buying something in an XL can give an outdated cut new life.

Shorts: Maternity shorts (cutoff)
Top: Yard sale $1
Shoes: Thrifted
Wing earrings: Ecolissa
Sunnies: Online shop (no longer in business)

Still on my wishlist for summer are some black wayfarers (I’d love real Ray-Bans!) and cute new skirts & shorts. (My pre-pregnancy bottoms fit in the legs now but not in the hips!) I cannot wait for more luscious yard sales and BBQs. Viva la summer!

Recent thrift haul

The beginning of spring is a great time to hit up thrift shops as spring cleaning results in many people raking through their closets and donating boxes of unwanted clothing and other items. This weekend was also the start of yard sale season where I live. Here are some of my finds from the past couple of weeks and the start of my 2011 warm-weather wardrobe.

Sebastian sleeping after a hard day of thrifting

At 8 months, Sebastian is finally old enough to roll with us on errands & outings without too much fuss. My mom, sister and I hauled him around Monday, browsing Salvation Army and Goodwill with a break for lunch. Bas enjoyed being pushed around in the shopping cart and crawling around between clothing racks. Eventually I nursed him to sleep, sitting on the floor while my sister sifted through jeans, and slipped him back into his stroller. :)

The breakdown

Goodwill prices have recently been driven up by hipsters and savvy thrifters like myself, which sucks. I spent about twice there this trip what I would have spent on the same items two years ago. Hopefully they bring their prices back down soon as the increases are surely hurting the people they are supposed to be helping. Salvation Army is still a good bet, and they also give my mother and other senior citizens a 50% discount on Mondays. Chase Me Again is a local thrift shop very close to my apartment that is packed with stuff and has great prices. Yard sales are hit or miss as everyone prices differently, but they usually want to unload everything and a little bartering can get you a long way.
