I'm Janine, wife to Donny and mama to Sebastian (age 18 months). We live (with our annoying dog) in a simple, cozy apartment in Portland, Oregon, where we are working on building our home and our lives with style. I believe in buying secondhand, in basic and natural products, and in living fabulously on any budget. More about us.

Budget Baby Nibble Tray

Sebastian munching on his nibble tray

Although Sebastian is still breastfeeding (and I have no plans to stop anytime soon), I don’t really consider his meals baby-led weaning anymore. He is definitely reaching toddler status, and one of the most popular way to feed toddlers is with the nibble tray. A nibble tray gives your child a variety of food choices (Toddlers love choices!) and spreads like this are a big hit around here. We found this BPA-free tray for around $1, or you can use a muffin tin, or just a regular plate really.

Sebastian - Nibble tray

Nibble tray contents: Rolled up balls of  ricotta cheese (Huge hit), sliced bell pepper, banana slices, stir-fry veggies, scrambled eggs.

The ricotta was left over from lasagna that my husband prepared a couple weeks ago – Single ingredients from larger dishes can make great baby snacks, and save random items from going bad. Bell peppers are from my mother’s garden. Bananas are cheap and sweet, and were Sebastian’s first food. Stir fry came mixed and frozen in a bag, around $1 (Serving shown is about 1/4 bag). Approximately one egg scrambled.

  1. How do you get him to NOT flip the tray over and have food everywhere?

    • Sebastian is a porker and really only interested in the food. For awhile he was into plates and bowls and would flip them but now that he’s accustomed to them he doesn’t pay them much notice. Sometimes he leans on the tray and flips it by accident so we feed him over an easy-to-clean area rug.

    • Donny says:

Sometimes when Z is in a “move around” mode we will place his bowl or plate on the floor next to the table. If he wants to eat he won’t move and if he doesn’t wanna eat the food isn’t ALL over the place. Also if he is interested in eating we will move the food back up onto the table. Since he eats standing up this is really easy for us and lets him have the ability to crawl/walk away when he doesn’t want to eat any more.

  2. Hey, glad that PK inspired you! (And thanks for the hat tip!)

That rolled up ricotta is GENIUS, I may try it soon – or it may be a good use for my currently quasi-retired bento egg moulds. Yes…excellent…(taps fingers Mr. Burns style)

this is awesome. i’m going to check that tray out now. my son is two and such a picky eater. i’ve tried buying him disney plates and i’m not sure if the design just distracts him. i like how this is plain. he can see everything i place on the tray without being distracted.
