Avocolada! AKA the Best Smoothie EVER
Upon receiving a large jar of Tropical Traditions coconut oil to review here, I was excited to look up food recipes using the stuff. One of the first trends I noticed was coconut oil being added to smoothies, and the “Avocolada” especially caught my attention. Avocados are one of my favorite foods and they are full of good fats. Dry skin is common after childbirth, especially with breastfeeding, and I’ve been trying to supplement with fish oil and natural fats to remedy this.
This smoothie is very heavy and filling. This is no low-cal drink – Just 2 tbsp of coconut oil is over 200 calories and a whole avocado is close to 300 – so it’s a good thing that it’s rich and easy to devour slowly.

Although I grabbed the Avocolada recipe from Gone Raw, I rarely measure out ingredients exactly.
What I (actually my husband) blended:
- 1 avocado
- Water
- Approx 2 cups pineapple
- Splash lime juice
- Small spoonful Tropical Traditions coconut oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
As you can see in the photo, I am not above store brands, and recycled glass mason jars are my favorite drinking glasses. I used Tropical Traditions USDA Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, which is the ingredient that really makes this drink taste so amazing. (I’m actually reluctant to call this a drink as it’s definitely more of a meal than a beverage.)
We use the Ninja Master Prep for blending and food processing and it is a great multi-tasker.
Above all, this drink is delicious, and it’s amazing how much flavor comes from just a tablespoon or so of coconut oil. If you are trying for the skin or digestive benefits of coconut oil but can’t stomach swallowing it straight, this is a great way to take it. It is also an exceptional ingredient just for the taste.

There was a virigin coconut oil craze here some years back. Not really a fan of it cos I hate anything too greasy (exceptions: cleansing oil). Try it on your hair!
ooooh thanks for sharing xxx
Yea I did that for Zeb, Helga. Its so good for babies skin and use for diaper irritation. You need to visit Chris soon so you guys can come up and meet us! I know its a long shot but it would be fun and you’d love Portland:)
I came across some coconut oil at a local asian store and thought of this post, and just had to try it. I’m so glad I did because it was delicious!
Ooh – What did you use it in/for? I’ve had in in the smoothie above (duh) and spread on bagels so far.
