Alternative Housewife

J

I'm Janine, wife to Donny and mama to Sebastian (age 18 months). We live (with our annoying dog) in a simple, cozy apartment in Portland, Oregon, where we are working on building our home and our lives with style. I believe in buying secondhand, in basic and natural products, and in living fabulously on any budget. More about us.

Chic Steals: Marshall’s and the World of Off-Price Retailing Off-price retailers are my favorite places to shop outside of thrift/vintage shops. I need to break the habit of referring to these stores as “discount”, as that descriptor has much different connotations.

Discount stores search for the cheapest items to buy, mostly private label merchandise (i.e., made specifically for a store and not sold outside of those stores). They may carry some designer labels, but the overall value of the items sold is less. (Think Wal-Mart.)
Off-price retailers search for items that are valuable to begin with and can be discounted further, dealing with both private label and nationally-recognized designer brands, and selling them for 20-60% off what you’d normally pay for the same item at a department store (like Sak’s). (Source)

More Sales: L.A.M.B., Matt & Nat, Gossip Girl

Sep 16, 2010 / 0 Comments

L.A.M.B. Pyramid Halman SatchelI usually don’t just pimp out sales, but I can’t justify buying this L.A.M.B. Pyramid Halman Satchel from ideeli right now and someone has to! It is the epitome of my style, although a little too small for me… At least that’s what I’m telling myself.

The bag I plan to carry all fall is my Matt & Nat diaper bag – love love love – which coincidentally was back on sale today as well. Unfortunately it’s sold out now, but there are other Matt & Nat bags going on Beyond the Rack from just $20 for a clutch or from $10 for wallets. That’s a good deal even with shipping, with most bags half off or more. I love their brand’s great style, and their vegan bags use recycled materials – My dipe bag is actually made from recycled water bottles!

Also on sale today, (admittedly more expensive) items as seen on Gossip Girl. The LAI Paris (shown here in Lemon Sherbert) was seen on the show (carried by Blair) and the LAI Amelia (shown here in Orange) is my personal favorite. Find these as well as the Haute Hippie collection (worn by Serena) for sale on Billion Dollar Babes.

Fall Shop ideeli: Betsey Johnson & L.A.M.B.

Sep 14, 2010 / 0 Comments

Get a jump on fall fashion by shopping ideeli for great online sales! Betsey Johnson shoes are still going from $79 for the next few hours, and there are more great deals coming up, including the L.A.M.B. shoes and handbags sale starting September 16th. ideeli is a great shopping site for discount designer fashions. Like most of these sites, shipping can take longer than traditional online orders, but you make up for it in savings. I love the simple Betsey Johnson leopard pumps and the L.A.M.B. bag shown below.
