I'm Janine, wife to Donny and mama to Sebastian (age 18 months). We live (with our annoying dog) in a simple, cozy apartment in Portland, Oregon, where we are working on building our home and our lives with style. I believe in buying secondhand, in basic and natural products, and in living fabulously on any budget. More about us.

Sunday Link Love

If you know of an awesome blog, please leave the link in the comments! Also let me know which articles you like so that I can keep a lookout for similar posts.

7 Gen Blog: Breaking News: Safe Chemicals Act of 2010 is Introduced A new report shows babies are born with traces of 287 toxic chemicals already in their blood.

Weighty Matters: 10 common fast food sandwiches way worse than KFC’s Double Down. This is why I memorize the calories in all of my favorite fast food items.

style list: Zoë Kravitz Dishes on Vera Wang, Tattoos, & Stealing Lenny’s T-Shirts She seems truly smart and badass in a relaxed way – one of my fave style icons.Serena's Loyola Tote in Purple by Bryna Nicole

CWTV Store: Gossip Girl I must be slow because I had no idea you could buy clothes and accessories straight from the show. Prices vary but what a fantastic gift an item would make for a diehard GG fan. I linked to Vanessa as her style is my favorite but you can also select Blair, Jenny, Lily or Serena. XOXO.

The Huffington Post: Peaceful Revolution: Motherhood and the $13 Billion Guilt Great article featuring a Tale of Two Births detailing the average American birth versus how birth should be. A must-read, it explains what needs to happen to increase breastfeeding rates (saving money and lives).

Chic Steals: Goodwill Outlet Store AKA “The Bins” I can’t believe I still haven’t been to the Bins considering that I live in Portland. I love that this post gives the backstory of how items make their way to the Outlet. Although I hate Goodwill’s rising prices (kind of defeats the purpose of serving the community when they price to hipsters rather than the actual needy), their mission of keeping clothing out of landfills is a great one. Check out the great haul this girl brings in from her first time at the Goodwill Outlet.

7 Pregnancy Beauty Changes

Apr 12, 2010 / 6 Comments

The severity of the expected pregnancy symptoms surprised me from the get-go, but I’ve been the most startled by changes in my beauty routines. While these may not seem especially dramatic, they are a lot harder to deal with when you are already exhausted. If only bi-weekly spa visits were within my budget.

1. Facial hair and peach fuzz is something I wasn’t expecting with pregnancy. By fuzz, I mean soft baby hairs taking over most of my body. While this peach fuzz doesn’t bother me, thick and rapidly growing facial hair does. Eyebrows become unruly overnight and unsightly stray hairs must be plucked daily.  On the upside, my hair and fingernails are still strong and shiny. On the downside…

I have a penis inside me!

Apr 12, 2010 / 12 Comments

This morning was my first ultrasound. Normally I would have had to wait until the anatomy scan at around 20 weeks, but there was some question about exactly when we conceived so my OB scheduled an appointment to date the pregnancy. As my doctor and I had guessed, I’m right at 16 weeks, meaning I basically got knocked up my first try. The result is this adorable thing:

While we weren’t expecting to see the gender at this appointment, it was definitely in the back of our minds. We were more than happy with watching the tech measure the baby and hearing the heartbeat again. Lucky for us, Baby was all too excited to show us his goods. At first it wasn’t entirely clear, but after I walked around for a minute he flipped over to give us a better view.

We could not be more excited, and seeing his features on the screen – the appointment seemed to go on forever and pinpointed everything from his hands and feet to the chambers of his heart -  definitely made the entire experience much more real.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any boy names so much as brainstormed.
