I'm Janine, wife to Donny and mama to Sebastian (age 18 months). We live (with our annoying dog) in a simple, cozy apartment in Portland, Oregon, where we are working on building our home and our lives with style. I believe in buying secondhand, in basic and natural products, and in living fabulously on any budget. More about us.

Sebastian - Almost 11 months at Bliss' Diner in Florence, OR

Sebastian is eleven months old today (the 23rd – I’m posting this a bit late). It doesn’t feel like time has flown by. It feels more like a year than any year before. Like the calender has it exactly right. I am excitedly planning Sebastian’s first birthday party and despite a rough past week, he is getting more independent and I’ve been able to get more done recently. We are able to get out of the house much more and with ease. Wherever we go, Sebastian is a hit. He gets tons of attention. Strangers are constantly referring to him as “she”, I guess due to his gorgeous curls. Whatev.

Milestones:

- Has been waving and pointing for awhile. Says “Dada” and “Mama” at least a few times a day, now with meaning. Babbles a lot of syllables. Clearly says “Caa” (with a throaty sound) at any and all animals, usually with pointing. Did this at every single dog and chipmunk on our camping trip.

- Claps. After a bite of food, stacking a block, or when he sees something he likes.

- Will sit and watch Sesame Street for 10-15 minutes straight. OK so that’s not a milestone but excites me enough that it should be one. Especially when I want to sit and check my email.

- Mimics things we do around the house. He tries to put keys in the door and plug in my laptop.

- My favorite: Signs for “milkies.” Donny and I have been doing the sign for ‘milk’ since 3-4 months but Sebastian just started doing it, and consistently. I have always read his cues well but now he can express his desire to nurse in absolutely certain terms, even if I’m not around.

Sebastian is loving:

- Climbing. He can go up and down the stairs with ease and climbs from the couch onto the coffee table.

- Waving his little American flag and attempting to hum.

- Sausage, and pasta. He also eats lots of green and kidney beans, and loves fish.

- Rolls his ball around on the floor, throws anything he can get his hands on (His signature is the over-the-shoulder toss), hits things with a mallet, plays with his shape-sorter toy and flips purposefully through books.

- BALLOONS. We plan to have tons at his party. He is obsessed. If he sees them somewhere he won’t pay attention to anything else.

- Milkies. We are still breastfeeding and the idea of weaning next month makes me LOL. I don’t even know how I would go about it. While I am fucking proud to have made it to a year of breastfeeding, stopping has just always felt way more unnatural than continuing.

Breastfeeding at 11 months

The older Sebastian gets, the more of him there is to love. He takes awhile to come around to strangers, taking things in solemnly until he is comfortable, which just makes it all the more special when he is relaxed and bursts into a fit of giggles for us. He clearly feels safe and loved. As I am typing this he is asleep within arm’s reach, on his twin mattress which we have pushed flush against our own bed. He is always right there, my little sidekick, “my stinky.” Happy 11 months, Stinky!

  1. I am crushing on him in that convertible so badly! What a priceless pic. :) I would totally blow that one up for a larger print, or put it on some note cards for corresponding with family.

  2. Don’t get me started on how time flies. That first year zooms by so fast it made my head spin with all three kids. Of course, it never slows down much, either…

  3. Almost 1 already?! Soon he’ll be dating :-)

    What a beautiful child!!!

  5. Monique says:

He is SUCH a gorgeous little guy! Can’t believe how fast time is moving, we’re knee deep in planning a first birthday party ourselves.

  6. He’s so gorgeous! Planning that first birthday is fun. My best advice for it is to make sure you don’t have much to do during the actual party so you can really enjoy it! Make food ahead and delegate hostess duties to family or friends. It’s such a special day – I’m so glad I could concentrate on the birthday boy when we celebrated one year.

    • Oh yeah. :) If weather allows we are going to have it at the park. We’ll have food laid out but no planned activities, just the park stuff to play on. The decorations and food are the part I’m obsessing on. The first birthday is more about the parents anyway!

Love his photo by the log. Such a faraway look, li’l boy! He’s soo cute. My nephew’s crazy with balloons, too. He stares at them and tries to grab one with his hand. If he holds it with both hands, he squeezes it and he looks like he’s trying to pop it.

your son is so precious. this picture is so badass :) love it. i wish my son had curls! i’m jealous

  9. Morgan says:

OMG I’m dying at how cute he is! He looks like an old soul, I’m not surprised his personality already has depth. Time does go by fast but at the same time it doesn’t at all! Holden is almost six months which is crazy, but at the same time I CAN’T BELIEVE this was ever not my life.

  10. Helga says:

He just keeps getting cuter and cuter! <3
